Diving into the world of skincare can be incredibly challenging because of the never-ending products that enter the market, the many opinions’ specialists recommend, the contradictions around products, and the harmful myths that surround skincare. Contradictions among specialists can pose as an obstacle when trying to create one’s ideal skincare routine. These contradictions and myths, who some may believe and practice, could damage the skin, and therefore, discouraging many from purchasing any products, doing certain routines, or doing further research. Harmful myths such as: “The more natural, the better,” or, “Open and close your pores with hot and cold water,” are the most popular and widely believed.
Although natural skincare, for example, fruits, can sound more appealing or logical, it is one of the worst things you could apply to your face. They contain higher percentages of ingredients that if not carefully measured, could cause sensitivity or irritation. Products that are formulated by professionals in a lab with ingredients from said fruits with the correct percentages and combinations are much more effective and safe.
Opening and closing pores with the use of hot and cold water have been a tradition in skincare for many years. It was believed that the steam hot water gave off would open the pores which would allow for deeper cleansing. Then splashing cold water to the face would close those same pores tightly and dirt would have a harder time penetrating the skin barrier. However, many scientists and dermatologists have proved that hot water does not open pores, it just softens the dirt within the pores allowing it to get out a lot easier. As for cold water, it doesn’t close the pores, but it can keep your pores from producing excess oil.
There are countless skincare myths that many believe and follow religiously trusting that it will improve the health of their skin, but ultimately it deteriorates it. Learning what is good for one’s own skin, what ingredients are too abrasive, and putting a little effort into our skincare, not only improves our skin, but it boosts our confidence and self-image.
