Nowadays, many might consider reading an outdated hobby. However, I believe whether it is fiction or nonfiction, reading opens our eyes to new perspectives and ways of seeing the world. It keeps our mind engaged and fills us with hope while living in a corrupted and imperfect world. Reading does not only help us develop our imagination and creativity, but it also gives us the skills to empathize with others at a deeper level.
Books are not just pages with random printed words. They tell a story. Stories that can impact and alter our simple yet complicated human lives. Like any artwork, we can’t judge the entire piece until we study and analyze the deeper intentions and story behind the piece. We have to pay attention to the morals of the stories the authors want to highlight within the literature. When we read, whether the book is fiction or nonfiction, we connect with the author and see how their experiences and personal life seep into the story and in its characters. Therefore, we are able to look into another person’s perspective, and broaden our understanding of the world.
Since I was a little kid, I enjoyed reading. Whenever I had free time at school or at home, I would easily read for hours until my eyes hurt. My favorite part about reading novels, is getting to know the characters, as closely as if they were my friends. I always relate to them and sympathize with them to the degree that I actually feel how they felt. For example, with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, I remember sharing the anger and frustration with Harry when no one believed him that he did not put his name in the Goblet of Fire. I remember feeling so bad for him. Similarly, when I read Fangirl or The Infernal Devices,I fell in love with the characters and how throughout the book, they grow and learn from their experiences. Overall, by reading, I have learned so much from each and every character, thus have grown into a more open-minded person.
One of the biggest reasons why I loved to read is because I get to listen to the voice of the author, which is their way of expressing themselves, as I do with art. Words have so much meaning and power, which is why I encourage others to take advantage of the multitude of mental and physical benefits reading provides us. Literature is a gift that we all have to cherish and appreciate, because the more we read, the more knowledge we get.
