Even though institutions involved with the government Attempt to help those in need, these institutions may be corrupt and use the money for the wrong reasons. In Panama, like around the world, organizations involved with the government attempt to help a variety of people: orphans, kids with psychological issues, and pregnant girls who have nowhere else to go. There are definitely good intentions behind the government because they want to take care of the population and people's safety, which allows them to create different options and centers to help people get through uncertain times.
Even when there is the want to help, every time there are people involved, there is always a chance for corruption or the improper use of money. This is why countries should work on providing checks and balances in order to catch when this happens. An example of this was recently seen in Panama where the branch who takes care of the organizations started noticing how oddly some of the funds were used and because of this they started conducting a deeper investigation that also consisted on showing up unannounced to the organizations to see the day to day lives of the kids and people involved.
Once the investigation was started they noticed the lack of hygiene and care that was going on in these places and the abuses that kids of all ages were going through. The mental abuses and mistreatments they were going through not only made the kids believe their terrible situation was their fault. It was also something they had to constantly repent for, and they were told that one mistake could ruin their lives forever and they messed up. Some of these places were also neglecting the people present of food and hospitality, making them suffer even more than they did outside of the organization. This reached the extent of using religion as an excuse for the maltreatmet. Some of the places denied the use of medication to the people that really needed it. they would simply tell the person that needed it urgently to pray about it so everything would be well and they would go through it. They constantly said that prayer would solve anything on the spot when they needed immediate attention.
Some of these investigations came to light due to previous generations that are now coming out and telling everyone all the traumas and things they went through in these places and many were sad that this was going onwithough anyone notecing. Social media allowed many of the people involved to voice their experience and make the authorities aware of what was going on, something one could not do in the past. These older people who just now were able to come out and speak on this had to go through everything without help and this is why it is not only affecting and advancing research in Panama but around the world so that countries don't have to get to this level before finding out there is something not right going on.
The psychological and physical abuses did indeed have a big impact on the kids and people affected and many argue on opposing sides of what should be the plan of action. some state that there needs to be someone held accountable and that that person should immediately face the consequences of the law which should be the first course of action to set an example. On the contrary, there is also an opposing side to this that states that these abuses have gone on for way too long and even though people are looking for a person to blame because of all the mistreatment, there also the need to be a focus on all the experiences that were victims on the matter. Because of this, they say that the main course of action should be to make things right with the victims even if it takes helping on an individual case. There are many actions that should be done but ultimately there has to be one that is prioritized and so the debate continues of which one should it be?
